There is a an excellent book "Prisoners of Geography,' written by a veteran journalist, Tim Marshal, which probably should be compulsory reading for anyone trying to understand how Iran views itself and the world.
Iran is a mountainous nation, with the Zagros Mountains in the west (home to major oil fields on the adjacent plain) and the Elburz Range in the north making it difficult to invade. And in the south, it has equally challenging swamplands.
But the same terrain that makes it difficult to invade makes it difficult to govern.
At the same time, its location allows it to dominate the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of the world's oil passes.
In Marshall's words, Iran is a prisoner of its own defensible yet divisive landscape, secure from full-scale invasion yet vulnerable to exploitation of its internal divisions.
So if the Americans and Israelis cannot fuel a popular uprising, they basically run out of options, as invasion is a close to impossible task with a country the size of peninsular India and huge natural barriers.

अपने स्कूल और कॉलेज के दिनों के अनुभव और स्मृति के आधार पर कह सकता हूँ कि अस्सी–नब्बे के दशक तक भारत की नज़र में संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका केवल अवसरों का देश नहीं था, बल्कि ‘शक्ति के असंतुलन’ का प्रतीक भी था। उनदिनों हम आर्थिक रूप से कमजोर थे, पर नैतिक रूप से निर्भीक; नव-उपनिवेशवाद या साम्राज्यवाद दिखता था या वो तौर-तरीके दीखते थे तो उसे इंगित करने का का साहस भी था।

आज स्थिति बिलकुल उलट है, हमारी समृद्धि बढ़ी, पर सामूहिक चेतना का स्वर धीमा हो गया है। कूटनीति “राष्ट्रीय हित” की भाषा में सिमटकर मानो नैतिक प्रश्नों से विमुख हो गई है। पर एक सभ्यता, जिसने दुनिया को करुणा और सह-अस्तित्व का पाठ पढ़ाया, वह यदि अन्याय पर मौन साध ले तो यह केवल रणनीति नहीं, आत्म-विस्मृति है। और यह आत्म-विस्मृति अपने देश के लिए शोक का एक लम्बा काल सा हो गया है। देश के अन्दर राजनीतिक सहमती/असहमति अपनी जगह लेकिन देश का एक साझा स्वर अमेरिका उन देशों तक जाना चाहिए था जिन्होंने मध्ययुगीन बर्बरता का आज के सन्दर्भ में ‘न्यू नार्मल’ बना दिया है ।
