i had a hunch, so i kept reading but switched to an english version on my kindle, and it was like night and day. so much of the sharpness and lucidity of her prose was lost in translation, the lack of rhythm-awareness sucked all the punchiness out of it

i went to a thrift bookstore with a friend recently and picked up a machado collection in translation because a lot of wonderful people spoke highly of her, and after reading the first two stories i was like "okay, i kinda see the vision, but something feels off"

once i started noticing the rhythm in prose, i can't unsee it, and it highkey ruined a lot of ukrainian translations for me

wonder if people realize that woobifying their favorite characters is also a form of dehumanizing them
