come to a similar realization that i wrote about a couple years ago: finding out your passion is mostly observing yourself dedicating time to things that nobody is asking for

⭐ New talk! andymatuschak.org/tat Coding agents might help us finally break out of two cages: the app model, which traps computing in one-size-fits-all silos; and programming as a specialization, which has crowded out cultures of imagination and domain insight.

Software Design is weird. It is undoubtedly the most impactful medium shaping the world today, yet even those of us working in it know very little of its history. We have no broadly-read books, no docu-series, no video essays. Most see the works of the past as obsolete rather than the rich heritage that has led us here. Every year, seminal works are lost to time accessible only in the memories of those who lived it. We're (re)building Software Design's most seminal moments one pixel at a time and sharing the stories behind the work straight from the designers themselves. Take a peek and sign up to follow along… historyofsoftware.org

Kat ⊷ the Poet Engineer
Kat ⊷ the Poet Engineer@poetengineer__·
i just realized sth: from elementary school thru high school in china, i was obsessed with making 黑板报, literally "blackboard papers". if you didn't grew up in china: every classroom has a large blackboard at the back, and a few students get to fill it with a themed "zine": you are the editor, the designer, the artist, and the writer. then it stays up for a few weeks for everyone to see. i loved it. i loved putting everything together, playing all these roles at the same time. i loved that it was public, a kind of creative power you rarely got as a kid. what i realized is what im doing now is essentially the same: art, design, writing, and then put everything out there for the internet to see. the thru line is embarrassingly direct.

one myth i used to have: that everyone naturally "finds their passion" - like a miraculous epiphany that hits you when you are not even looking. but that never happened to me. i have a lot of interests. i have a clear sense of what i like/dislike doing. but if you ask what im about, especially in an artist statement which i still dread, i freeze. "the intersection of art and technology", which is about as clarifying as a painter saying "i explore color and emotion". i learned knowing the structure of your own interests doesn't come naturally. articulating it is even harder. but the good news is the interests also aren't random - there’s a latent structure, a shape of the soul. its just that uncovering it takes way more reflection, pattern-spotting, and trial and error than i initially expected.
