These macrophage populations differ in localization, tissue residency, phagocytosis, and cytokine production. Analysis of human OM also showed a correlation between mac populations and post-viral smell loss. Another reason to care about the olfactory mucosa as an immune organ!

Sharing a paper from my PhD work that just came online in @MucosalImmunol We found that there are 2 populations of macrophages in the olfactory mucosa: one dedicated to interactions with neurons, and another primed for rapid immune defense. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

I find myself truly amazed at how much we have been able to infer about how certain things happen without ever actually “seeing” them (in the conventional sense). I wonder when this change in mindset happened, historically.
