The fact that theatrical distribution CANNOT just be a function of 'clout & data' is more pronounced than ever before! Distribution requires a deep understanding of content syntax & more so, audience demographics / psychographics at a hyper local level. Every film's journey to its audience is bespoke & the sooner we understand this as a fraternity, the better we'll do with our strike rate. A mass film HAS TO be marketed on ground over a sustained period at the points of consumption where its audience truly exists & then be released there! Similarly, niche films that appeal to an urban mindset must be 'sampled', but cannot be force fed to an audience that doesn't relate to their story-telling style. Scenarios like those not only result in what I'd call 'content indigestion' but also cause aggressive apprehension around consistent consumption in the future. More so, this mismatch results in lopsidedly vocal criticism of such films early into their release weeks, thus diminishing their chance of succeeding as the days go by! This is a specialised job, not an ancillary! Let's treat it like one! #Films #Cinema #Musings

Amused by people who have been posting these 'Rohit Shetty has put the whole story of #SinghamAgain out in the trailer' tweets since yesterday. I assume these guys expected Captain Vikram Rathore & Azad to be electrocuted to death by Kalee Gaikwad in #Jawan? Or they thought Tara Singh & Sakeena would be crying over their son Charanjeet's dead body in the climax of #Gadar2? And perhaps, they anticipate the goofy & loveable Rooh baba to be beaten to a pulp by Manjulika by the time #BhoolBhulaiyaa3 comes to an end? Great cinema is NOT about the 'story'. It's all about 'STORY TELLING'! And what #RohitShetty has promised through this trailer is clap trap moments in abundance, the epitome of fan service & the re-telling of one of our greatest epics in a manner that is 'theatrical' in every sense of the term! The film is poised to create a box office storm & your cockiness, cynicism or ill intent (whichever of the three it may be...or perhaps all of them?) is not going to prevent that from happening! I could have 'summarised' what I want to convey by just saying 'आप टुचिये हैं!' (got it?), but I attempted to give this elaborate (and hopefully interesting) explanation for it! THAT is what filmmakers try to do. अब समझे? 😉

When the opening day number of a film is higher than the average lifetime business of all the past films featuring the actor / actress in it, the credit for success ought to go to the film makers! All this PR around the 'stardom' of these actors is silly & needs to be called out. They're fantastic actors & even better people I'm sure, but their face on a film's poster DOES NOT draw an opening & I hope they & the makers of their forthcoming films choose to be rational when it comes to deciding their remuneration going ahead. THAT would be the factor which will draw the P&L statement of their upcoming films & eventually, the longevity of their careers. Hoping & praying that sanity prevails! #FoodForThought #Films #Cinema
