Interesting in all of this Journal of Schenkerian Studies nonsense is that one of the few responses from a) a woman and b) someone who is *not* an editor of the journal is one of the only long-form, reasoned, genuine responses. Hat tip to Suzannah Clark.
@Komaniecki_R Thanks to experience in church choirs, popular music and jazz. They are nevertheless made to feel inadequate in Music Theory 101. Guthrie Ramsey has been making this point for at least 30 years.
@Komaniecki_R Jackson's racism in these passages must be called out. It blames Black culture rather than white racism for keeping Black people out of classical music. It views Black music students as needing uplift, when in fact many arrive in music school with much better harmonic ears
I can't stop thinking about the multilayered stupidity and racism in this paragraph by Dr. Timothy Jackson. To suggest that diversity in music academia could be achieved if only Black families corrected their responsibilities and got their kids into classical music.
@hf7y@ethanxhoward@Komaniecki_R In my view many jazz musicians are far more accomplished in tonal harmony than many modernist classical composers, who not primarily interested in common practice tonality. The jazz extensions of harmonic theory have been incredibly influential and should be taught
