The fact is Malaysian healthcare system is a charity that provides reasonably good range of services paid for by the government through subsidies. But what are the hidden costs? 1. Overworked and underpaid healthcare workers. Not to mention blanket payment by government through “Flexi Allowance” so they could squeeze the life out of houseman without paying them overtime and making them worked inhumane hours. The consequence of this, many are quitting the public service. 2. Suboptimal training for houseman. Often junior doctors are overworked and occupied with tasks beyond their job scopes which contribute nothing to their training. For instance, pushing patient to scan/theatre, running to lab for bloods, preparing + administering medications. The consequence of this, houseman tend to function on muscle memories and doing only the norms because they have very little time to study/acquire clinical skills which defeats the purpose of houseman training. Ultimately these hidden costs would need to be paid by ordinary Malaysians. Health workers are quitting the public services in huge numbers and the turnover rate of new staffs to fill in the vacancies is low. In few years time, the trajectory of where the health system is heading is very uncertain and bleak. Nevertheless, good luck to all Malaysians.

A husband was left amazed by a hospital bill of only RM258 for his wife's brain surgery and treatment expenses over 26 days at a government hospital. Initially, we planned the surgery at a private hospital, estimating a cost of RM150,000. The surgery was a success, marking the end of a challenging 26-day journey. After three months in the hospital and under the care of the best medical team, I was pleasantly surprised when settling the bill at checkout— a mere RM258. "Malaysia's healthcare system indeed stands out for its accessibility to the people. Opting for a private hospital could have resulted in costs at least a thousand times higher," he said. Lee's experience has drawn attention to the efficiency and affordability of public healthcare in Malaysia. Responding to his post, Eunice Lee wrote: "The Malaysian government's medical system and fees are among the top 10 best in the world! One of my uncles had brain surgery at Johor Baru Central Hospital, which included a stay in the ICU, ambulance, and hospitalisation costs... all for RM150! So grateful for Malaysia!" Anthony Tan said: "Government hospitals are arguably the best welfare for us Malaysians." nst.com.my/news/nst-viral…
