The former engineer had planned to testify that his ex-employer illegally used copyrighted data to train ChatGPT. Balaji: "It doesn't feel right to be training on people's data and then competing with them." He quit OpenAI in August after helping build some of its core technology. His death came as Times lawyers identified him as having "unique and relevant documents" about alleged copyright violations. OpenAI called him "one of our strongest contributors."
