For the uninitiated, ‘delimitation’ is an exercise that aims to revise the number of Lok Sabha seats for each state based on the revised population data. The stated objective of this is to ensure proportional representation for all Indians. Now population growth is primarily influenced by each state's fertility rates. Notably, all the southern states (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana) have achieved fertility rates below 2, while states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh maintain higher rates. As a consequence of this demographic contrast, the southern states collectively will have just 164 seats, while Uttar Pradesh & Bihar combined will have 222 seats in the Lok Sabha. This essentially implies that South Indian states will be penalised for successfully controlling their population. Is this fair? It is also notable that this change in the Loksabha seats favours the Modi govt as their voter base is significantly stronger in the North compared to the south.

The 5 Southern States of India contribute 31% of India's GDP and that's expected to *grow* to 35% by 2030. Meanwhile, our representation in Parliament will shrink to 20%. This is what injustice looks like

India is heading towards partition between North and South in the next 10-15 years.
