#TechTalkThursday Week 5 of 20 | AT Village Spotlight Deaftronics: Harnessing Solar Power to Restore Hearing Across Africa The Challenge: Across Africa and the developing world, 70% of hearing aids distributed are only used for a month Hearing Health & Technology Matters not because people don't need them, but because the batteries are too expensive and too hard to find. There are 525 million people with hearing loss, and 70% of them live in developing countries. For a child in rural Botswana, a flat battery doesn't just mean silence, it means missing school, missing opportunity, and missing out on life. The Solution: Tendekayi Katsiga is the Director of Deaftronics Botswana, a company that produces high-quality, low-cost solar-powered hearing aids made by people who are deaf, for people with hearing loss. The Solar Ear kit,a hearing aid, solar charger, and four rechargeable batteries — starts at $100, compared to traditional hearing aids that start at $1,000 without batteries. Becauseinternational The batteries charge via sunlight, fluorescent light, or USB, last up to three years, and are compatible with 80% of hearing aids on the market. Deaftronics has served over 30,000 users with hearing impairment in over 40 countries. But Tendekayi didn't stop at the device. Deaftronics also built mDREET, a mobile app for affordable community hearing assessments and pioneered sign language dictionaries for banking and HIV/AIDS awareness, because access to sound is only the beginning of access to life. Meet the Innovator: Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Tendekayi was inspired by a chance encounter with a 15-year-old boy at a mall whose hearing aid had stopped working not from any fault of the device, but simply because he couldn't afford the batteries. That moment sparked a mission. In his career, Tendekayi has worked across Zimbabwe, Canada, Brazil, Jordan, and Botswana, and has facilitated partnerships with Solar Ear, Johnson & Johnson, and UNICEF. He is a recipient of the Johnson & Johnson Champions of Science Africa Innovation Award, the Builders of Africa's Future Award, the South African Designers Awards, and the Digital Accessibility & Assistive Technology Award, and has been featured in Newsweek, National Geographic, BBC, and WIRED. Deaftronics doesn't just restore hearing , it restores dignity, economic participation, and belonging. #TechTalkThursday| Week 4 of 20 Cure Bionics: Technology Restoring Movement and Independence Across Africa The Challenge: Across Africa and the Middle East, millions of people living with limb loss face an impossible choice: go without a prosthetic, or pay prices that put bionic technology completely out of reach. Traditional prosthetics are costly, inaccessible, and rarely designed with African users in mind. For amputees in underserved communities, the gap between losing a limb and regaining independence can feel insurmountable. The Solution: Tunisian engineer Mohamed Dhaouafi's Cure Bionics uses 3D printing technology to manufacture affordable, high-performance bionic arms and prosthetic legs, built for real life. The Hannibal Bionic Hand is controlled by muscle signals, features haptic feedback, a 24-hour battery, and connects to a companion app for personalised training. CE certified and CNAM approved, it delivers world-class prosthetic technology at a fraction of traditional costs. Cure Bionics doesn't just restore movement, it restores independence. By making bionic limbs affordable and accessible, the company is reaching amputees who have been failed by conventional systems, returning to them the ability to work, care for their families, and live without limits. Meet the Innovator: Mohamed Dhaouafi, founder of Cure Bionics, has been recognised by Forbes, TIME Magazine, the World Economic Forum, and MIT for his work democratising access to bionic technology across Africa and beyond. At the Zero Project Conference 2026 in Vienna, our Founder & Executive Director Irene Mbari-Kirika took the stage alongside Meera Shenoy of Youth4Jobs Foundation to tackle a critical question: How do we scale gender and disability inclusion across the Global South? The fireside chat brought together insights from women entrepreneurs in Africa and India, highlighting the barriers that still hold women with disabilities back: limited access to skills, digital tools, finance, markets, and leadership opportunities. But it also highlighted the solutions. Cross-regional partnerships. Scalable models. Lived experience driving policy and practice. The Africa–Asia bridge isn't just a concept, it's a pathway to accelerating inclusive solutions that work for emerging economies on their own terms. Thank you to the Zero Project for championing this vital conversation. We were honored to pay a courtesy call on Dr. Michael Munene, the newly appointed CEO of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) Kenya, to discuss practical pathways for advancing disability inclusion across the country. Together with our partners from Humanity & Inclusion and Riziki Source, we explored areas of alignment, including the Unlocking Opportunities program — a partnership with Mastercard Foundation focused on economic empowerment and skills development for youth with disabilities. The conversation centered on how government, implementing partners, and development actors can work in step to expand access to education, strengthen employability, and support entrepreneurship for young people with disabilities. The meeting created space to review shared priorities, clarify coordination mechanisms, and identify how collective expertise can translate into measurable impact. Strengthened collaboration with NCPWD will help ensure programs are responsive to national policy frameworks while remaining grounded in the lived realities of youth with disabilities. We look forward to building on this engagement to support inclusive policies and scalable solutions that open sustainable pathways to learning, work, and enterprise across Kenya. #TechTalkThursday | Week 3 of 20 Autism Aid App: Technology Bridging the Autism Support Gap in West Africa The Challenge: Across West Africa, families of children living with Autism face critical barriers to support and resources. Access to Autism professionals is limited, early intervention tools are scarce, and awareness remains low. Without accessible support systems, children struggle to develop essential communication skills, and families navigate the Autism journey in isolation. The gap between need and available resources leaves thousands of children without the intervention that could transform their lives. The Solution: Ghanaian co-developer Alice Amoako's Autism Aid App is the first mobile application for Autism in Ghana and West Africa, using technology to improve communication skills for children living with Autism. The app provides easy access to professionals, therapeutic tools, and resources that promote Autism awareness, all from a smartphone. Families no longer need to travel long distances or face prohibitive costs to access critical support. The technology doesn't just deliver resources, it builds community. By connecting families to professionals and each other, the Autism Aid App breaks down the isolation that has defined the Autism experience in the region, making intervention accessible, affordable, and culturally relevant. Meet the Innovator: ALICE MAMAGA AKOSUA AMOAKO presented the Autism Aid App at Inclusive Africa AT Village 2023, driven by a passion to make the world a better place for children living with Autism through technology. As a disability inclusion consultant and digital social entrepreneur, she's proving that mobile innovation can reach families where traditional support systems have failed. What happens when students who are blind gain direct access to digital learning platforms used in mainstream classrooms? At St. Oda School for the Blind AT Lab, students are using Chromebooks to access Khan Academy as a supplement to classroom learning in Mathematics, English, and the Sciences. While the content was developed for an American curriculum, teachers have identified relevant sections that strengthen core subject mastery. The platform’s audio-supported lessons and screen reader–enabled navigation make it practical for learners with visual impairments.Teachers are investing time to understand the platform more deeply so they can assign exercises and guide learners effectively. Integration with Google Classroom has made implementation smoother, especially for upper-grade classes already familiar with the system. To address gaps caused by limited Braille course books, we are also introducing the Kenya Education Cloud. This Government of Kenya platform provides interactive digital content aligned with the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum. With reliable internet access, learners are engaging with curriculum-aligned materials independently, and teachers are incorporating these resources into lessons through the computer lab. Access to the right tools is changing how learning happens. World Cancer Day 2026 | United by Unique On this #WorldCancerDay2026, we join the global movement calling for cancer care that responds to real people and real needs. Cancer affects people differently, and for persons with disabilities, accessing screening, treatment, information, and support often comes with additional barriers. People-centred cancer care means recognising these differences and designing services that are accessible, respectful, and responsive. This year’s focus builds on the need to listen to lived experiences and use them to inform policy, healthcare delivery, and advocacy. When voices are heard, systems improve. We continue to advocate for inclusive health systems where no one is excluded from care. #WorldCancerDay2026 #UnitedByUnique #DisabilityInclusion #AccessibleHealthcare #PeopleCentredCare
