It is estimated that more than 80% of the pre-Columbian gold pieces exhibited in museums around the world come from the #Lambayeque (or #Sicán) culture, developed on the northern coast of #Peru between the years 750 AD. C. and 1375 AD. C., mainly in the valleys of La Leche, Lambayeque, Chancay and Reque.
In just one of the tombs of the Huaca El Oro (within the Bosque de Pómac Historical Sanctuary) nearly 1,200 kilos of precious metals were unearthed. This includes crowns, ceremonial vessels (keros), and the iconic funerary masks.
The Lambayeque were great masters of metallurgy. They perfected advanced alloying techniques (gold, silver and arsenic copper). They produced objects in series by hammering and laminating, achieving a material abundance far superior to that of other contemporary cultures.
Despite the looting that its archaeological sites have suffered, today, the legitimately recovered treasures saturate the display cases of key venues in the region such as the Sicán National Museum, the Royal Tombs Museum of Sipán and the Gold Museum of Peru in Lima.
