@cybersecdancer I think setting your beauty standards to those you see online isn’t the solution. Everything you see online is tailored, edited, and manipulated to a point where is not a reflection of reality. The only one you should be comparing yourself against is you. You’re doing great Dany!

Hi everyone! Im coming back to the idea of a “Hackers on Hackers” podcast If you haven’t seen Actors on Actors, it’s essentially an honest and intimate conversation where they reflect on their careers, projects they’ve worked on, and their experiences I just need my first pair

Would anyone be interested in an Actors on Actors-style podcast but for cyber security? Imagine a 1 hour candid conversation between two of your favorite people from across the industry. Sharing stories about what inspires them, some of their coolest projects, etc.

@cybersecdancer I think a lot of people feel that way. The best way to fight it is to try and put yourself out there. You don’t have to become friends with everyone, but being friendly can make a huge difference. Saying hi, good morning, asking how their weekend was or day is going, small things

You know… @deviantollam and I have had some really fun conversations just randomly in a desert at a secure nuclear facility. I bet this would be an incredible series just based on some of the personalities mentioned and the concept. I’m down if you need to create a proof of concept

i know that pathways into cybersecurity (as well as how much we’re all getting paid) is a taboo topic, so here’s a blatantly honest timeline of my progression working in cybersecurity, including my years of experience, education, certifications, and my base salary (*salaries shared below do not include any stock/RSU, one-time bonuses, performance bonuses, benefits, education paid for, trainings, conferences, etc.): 2017 (i was 21 years old): no prior IT experience! in my first year of my masters in cybersecurity program. TD Synnex pays 100% of my entire tuition for my masters degree. get my first job in cybersecurity working as an “associate SOC analyst” at the company that is now called TD Synnex. i think i made $45K USD. 2018 (22 years old): 1 year working in cybersecurity, promoted to a normal (non-associate) SOC analyst, focused in incident response. i think i made roughly $60K USD. 2019 (23 years old): 2 years working in cybersecurity, i graduated with my MSc in cybersecurity degree. TD Synnex moved me to spain (upon my request!) so that i could be closer to the rest of the SOC team members. i was promoted to “cybersecurity incident response manager” and made roughly $60K USD but was paid in euros given i was living in spain. 2020 (24 years old): 3 years working in cybersecurity, i was still living in spain. i earned my comptia security + and CISSP certifications. this is the year i began making cybersecurity content on youtube, twitter, etc. still making roughly $60K USD equivalency in euros. 2021 (25 years old): 4 years working in cybersecurity, i am forced to move back to america from spain due to a visa issue. i begin working at IBM X-Force as an “incident response consultant”. i made $145K base salary. i earned my CCSP this year. this is the year i REALLY began focusing on content creation within the cybersecurity world for social media - the “cybersecmeg” brand grew. 2022 (25 years old): 5 years working in cybersecurity. i’m still an “incident response consultant” working at IBM X-Force. i get a raise (no promotion/change of title) and make about $158K base salary. 2023 (26 years old): 6 years working in cybersecurity. no new certs or education beyond what i’d already acquired. i presented for SAP’s ASUG conference, ISC’s Security Congress, was asked to speak on the news about security topics, won multiple awards for my work in the cybersecurity field, etc. i leave IBM and begin working at crowdstrike as a “senior cybersecurity consultant”. my compensation is - in total - much higher than at IBM. 2024 (27/28 years old): 7 years working in cybersecurity. still a “senior cybersecurity consultant” at crowdstrike. not focusing on obtaining any new certifications as of current, i’m just doing my job the best i can and then focusing on myself. i hope to promote to be a “principal cybersecurity consultant” in 2025.

@iamsharzun That’s not a rule. It helps employees within the company and on your team to know if they’re being paid similarly or if there are huge discrepancies. Salary transparency at every stage helps when others are negotiating raises or when interviewing for a role.

As an employee to a certain company or a firm, you shouldn't disclose your salary you're getting from that company to ANYONE, as long as you are in the company. It's the rules.
InfoSec with Beck@infosecwithbeck

@cybersecmeg Would you mind sharing your base salary at Crowdstrike. You were very transparent up until that point.

@cybersecdancer I’m really sorry that happened to you Dany. I wouldn’t attribute his actions to your appearance. I would attribute his actions to his own issues and lack of morals and compassion. It’s very possible he would have still done it regardless of how you appear.

@cybersecdancer The biggest question is why are kids viewing influencers as role models anyways? Social media is a business. And “influencers” are just another term for a business trying to make money from their consumers.

@cybersecdancer I think part of the harsh reality is that young people shouldn’t be looking to these people as the definition of beauty or something to achieve. Parents should have conversations with their kids to help them recognize that social media is a carefully curated look at someone else.
