In sharp fighting, over 1,000 Confederates were killed, wounded, or captured. Morgan escaped with a few hundred men but was finally taken prisoner eight days later. To be a successful conquistador you had to: -Arrive in a totally alien culture, learn enough of the local language and culture and religion and politics to exploit all the divisions among the natives to your own benefit. -Operate extremely far from your own logistical base with almost no hope of resupply or reinforcement. Make your own boats, siege equipment and gunpowder from scratch using whatever you can scrounge together. -Encourage and motivate your men to stay with you even though they have a 50% chance of dying from some horrific tropical disease, 25% chance of dying in battle and a non-zero chance of being sacrificed to a demonic sun god on top of a giant pyramid. -Be constantly outnumbered, surrounded and possibly facing arrest if you go home. Who could do this today?
