Notes from the conversation with H.E. Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State at @Harvard on development and succession plan. With over a year to the end of his tenure and 2027 elections approaching, Governor Seyi Makinde spoke with clarity on leadership, governance, and Nigeria’s future at the @Kennedy_School discussion on Industrialization and Leadership in Africa. He reminded us that “industrialization rises or falls on leadership,” but more importantly, that “we need strong institutions and not strong men.” In his words, governance must be about ‘institutions more than an individual”, and he desires the next person to succeed him to be “loyal to the state and the people of Oyo state, not to individuals or an individual”. Reflecting on his personal background, he shared how his mum was once a telephone operator in the same Government House where he now serves as Governor; a story grounding his belief that “education is key” and must not remain solely in the purview of the Federal Government for it to develop in Nigeria. On 2027 elections and politics, he believes “opposition is the way to go,”, and he is open to working across divides, and even “open to Presidency if the opportunity opens up.” He reflects on the mistake he made in 2023. And states that if he were President, he knows what to do. On infrastructure development, he also admitted, with hindsight, “I would have borrowed more to do sustainable projects, if I had I known the Federal Government would devalue the Naira this far,” underscoring the trade-offs in development financing and lack of funding for many African countries. He called for making the environment conducive for diaspora return, argued that he does not agree with the current government tax efforts, and that tax meant for states should not be centralized, and emphasized that federal and state governments must have clearly coordinated, not conflicting responsibilities. Looking ahead, he pointed to continuity: major infrastructure like the circular road, expected to reach completion milestones soon, and future plans under the Omituntun agenda, including Ilu Titun as a “virgin land” for new development, with housing for middle-income earners and land-swap infrastructure. Above all, one line stayed with me:“Confidence is a kind of infrastructure.”. A leader is dealer in hope. In picture: Governor H.E. @seyimakinde, and the astute @Dr @akande_debo DBA CMGR FCMI. @oyostategovt @OYSIPA_NG @FeedbackOYSG #SeyiMakindeatHarvard

WHAT IS COMING IN OSUN STATE? Must Reas for all Osun Indigenes... I have a special interest in the Osun State gubernatorial race - and my reasons are not complicated. As a keen student of history, I have observed that our proud Osun State has not always been fortunate in her selection of leaders. Or perhaps the more honest diagnosis is this: she has not always been circumspect enough in her choice of governors. Why? Because since 1999, this state has produced only two governors who were, by any rigorous standard, academically formed and professionally seasoned. 1999 – 2003. Baba Bisi Akande: A man who studied Accountancy. Who acquired professional discipline in the United Kingdom and emerged a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales - one of the most respected professional bodies on earth. Those who knew him in his prime will testify without hesitation: between 1963 and 1979, as an account officer and manager at British Petroleum, he was not merely competent - he was excellent. A man forged in the furnace of professional rigour before he ever stepped into the arena of public office. The Asiwaju of Ilá-Òràngún set a standard. Unfortunately, those who followed him into Government House were, at best, mediocres - and at worst, unfortunate accidents in office. One was a soldier with no relevant grounding in private enterprise. The other? A poorly read AC repairer who wore the garment of governance like a borrowed agbada - ill-fitting and embarrassing. It was in one of those unfortunate eras that Osun became infamous - a state that rewarded her workers with poverty. Civil servants of that period did not expect to be paid in full. Half wages for full labour. Half dignity for full service. Accidents in office. And why do I call them accidents? Because a leader who has not been shaped by knowledge will shape policy by guesswork. A poorly educated leader does not merely misunderstand problems - he misidentifies them entirely. He brings a matchstick to fix a broken engine, and wonders why the machine will not move. We appeared to find our footing again with Baba Oyetola - an insurance magnate; a man of commerce and competence. But we aborted that propitious marriage at the altar of sentiment. We chose family heritage and household popularity over educated minds and proven capacity. And that is how we arrived - at the dancer. A man who struggles not only to communicate his agenda for the state, but who cannot even articulate his own achievements after three years in office. If your scorecard requires this much translation, perhaps the score was never there to begin with. The last three years have been underwhelming at best - and a quiet misfortune at worst. But now - now - we have a chance. A chance to correct the errors of the past. A chance to reverse the ill fortune we have visited upon ourselves by elevating sentiment over substance. Osun deserves a man who is truly educated. Professionally experienced. Politically exposed. This man holds degrees from Lagos State University and the University of Ado-Ekiti. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and the Institute of Credit and Economic Management of Nigeria. His professional resume spans nearly three decades at the helm of legacy financial institutions - Wema Bank, Trans-International Bank, Enterprise Bank - institutions that felt his Midas touch and did not forget it. We have not even begun to speak of his public service record. And yet - does what has already been said not impress you? When you hold this man's credentials against the failed experiments this state has endured, are you not moved? Are you not ready? ASIWAJU MUNIRUDEEN BOLA OYEBAMIJI. Shall I Begin?

@AkinlabiAdekola @africa_doubleq 540 shops were built at Bodija Market by Ibadan North LGA under Chairman @Chairman_IBNLGA and allocated free to curb street trading and improve safety. Is that propaganda too? Good governance and real dividends of democracy matter something APC continues to fall short on.

Oyo APC will have a clear pathway to victory next year if they can do the following; - Overpower the civil servant in the poll - Convience the pensioners whose their party told they can go home to die not to vote Seyi's candidate. - Upbeat the share will of market people for GSM.

@dapolam a former commissioner and a member of federal Rep without any achievement to point to in his constituency during his tenure said “Seyi Makinde administration has lived up to expectations”. Only a blind and mediocre person will utter such an irrelevant statement. SMH

All in all, Oba Sharafadeen Alli has a very calm demeanor with zero scandal to his name despite being in active politics for decades. I think that’s one of the reasons he is a go to alternative for the unpopular Oyo APC.
