The shocking gap in government spending on a child versus an older person is revealed in our latest report: Between 2004-05 and 2023-24, real per-person government spending on pensioners increased by 55%, compared to just 20% for children #spendingreview if.org.uk/research-posts…

Took >6 years to get to this point. Now it's apparently all cancelled. Luckily there's no rush: It's not like we have a housing crisis, or that Cambridge's house price to salary ratio is one of the highest in the country, or that the UK needs growth. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@inter_gen People who've contributed to London communities, paid income & council tax for years & subsidised other schemes. The NHS wants experienced staff to continue working full-time & not retire early or reduce hours. Schemes like this have an impact. How much is lost by fare dodging?

"On intergenerational fairness grounds, the mayor of London must stop this free travel bung to workers below state pension age.” Over-60s free travel 'costs £84m in lost revenue' bbc.com/news/articles/…

@inter_gen Look at the board of any London headquartered FTSE company Most will have board members aged over 60 Insane that they can travel to a board meeting in London for free, while the youngster serving their coffee has to pay to get there.

The FoI on this can be found at tfl.gov.uk/corporate/tran… The "cost" is estimated only ...its not a real figure. I wonder how often 60+ Oyster-card holders actually use it. I have had one since mid-2023. I pay the annual £10 admin fee. I think in all that time I have used it no more than 10 times. A big part of that is that I worked in London for 44 years without a break I lived in London all that time (and still do). My generation (and older) have made our financial contribution via tax and rates/ council tax. I dont begrudge any moves to reduce the cost of fares for younger generations or abolishing them altogether. Why do some people/interest groups seem to driven to share misery/ dissatisfaction?

I am so serious when I say that the 32% of people that oppose free bus travel for under 22 year olds should be identified and sent to the moon An island of people addicted to misery that only wants to inflict further misery on the younger generation

So…the group that GETS FREE BUS TRAVEL, opposes it for young people who have significantly less money and uses public transport more frequently. The privilege and entitlement of the Boomer generation never ceases to amaze me.

Under 22’s literally screwed up two years of their lives so older people could LIVE. This is how they get treated. We really need to strip ungrateful boomers of their unearned entitlements so they stop leeching off everyone else.

Throwing kids under the bus again to feed the vampiric uni sector...Is 40 years of repayment not enough? How about 9% taken from salary every year if young grads manage to earn Nat Min Wage of £25,000? When will governments accept that marketisation of #highed failed?

EXCLUSIVE @theipaper: Ministers are considering changing the law to increase tuition fees in line with inflation each year. Could be accompanied by more generous maintenance to sugar the pill. Link in thread below👇
