During National Police Week, our nation gathers to pay tribute to the men and women in uniform who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. May we never forget their courage and sacrifice, and may we always honor the badge with respect, gratitude and unity.

From the lightbulb to the airplane, American innovation has always moved the country forward. Ahead of America’s 250th anniversary, we’re sharing stories from national parks that preserve the legacy of the inventors, entrepreneurs, and visionaries who helped shape our nation. Human flight became reality on a cold morning in 1903, when two self-taught bicycle mechanics, Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright, lifted off for 12 seconds and 120 feet. Through teamwork, persistence, and a willingness to solve problems others thought impossible, they overcame one of humanity’s greatest challenges. The airplane changed everything. It shrank distances, turned days-long journeys into hours, and helped build the modern global economy. What they achieved still shapes how we move, connect, and see the world today. Their story is preserved at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where visitors can walk the ground where flight began and the world changed.

1,000 benches and counting! At Interior, every detail matters, even something as simple as a bench. @NatlParkService technicians from around the country have been rebuilding and replacing well-loved benches across the @NationalMallNPS and at parks throughout Washington, DC. Last week at Farragut Square, workers from the Historic Preservation Training Center installed the 1,000th bench. Built with purpleheart wood, these benches are stronger and more durable than oak and designed to support countless conversations, coffee breaks, and quiet moments in our public spaces. Our partners at the @GoldenTriDC joined NPS crews at Farragut Square to see what revitalizing public space looks like up close. Comfortable, safe, and well-cared-for parks invite people to stay a little longer. Sidewalks feel more alive. Communities feel the uplift. Good for people. Good for business. Good for America. 🇺🇸 Keep an eye out for a new bench near you as we continue supporting @POTUS’s effort to keep Washington, DC, safe, beautiful, and welcoming.

It's Police Week. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in #WashingtonDC honors federal, state, and local law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety and protection of our nation and its people. The memorial features two curving, marble walls inscribed with the names of more than 22,000 officers who died in the line of duty, dating back to the first known death in 1786.

During National Police Week, we recognize our BLM law enforcement professionals who serve America’s public lands and the communities connected to them. From remote backcountry patrols to some of the busiest recreation areas in the country, our officers answer calls for help, protect public safety, and safeguard the landscapes and resources entrusted to us. We honor that service and the commitment behind it and the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

They work at ports, at crime scenes, and deep in some of the most remote places in America. @USFWS law enforcement includes Special Agents, Wildlife Inspectors, and Federal Wildlife Officers, along with the analysts, forensics experts, and support staff behind the scenes. They investigate wildlife trafficking. They protect endangered species. They patrol national wildlife refuges and respond when people need help. During National Police Week, we recognize the full team behind the badge and the work they do every day to protect wildlife and the American public.

Today marks the 81st anniversary of Allied victory in Europe, bringing an end to World War II on the continent. At the World War II Memorial, stone and bronze honor the millions who served, remember those who never came home, and mark a turning point in the fight to restore freedom. As the generation who lived this history grows smaller, places like this ensure their stories endure. We honor their courage, their service, and the sacrifice that made victory possible. 🇺🇸 Photo by Carol M. Highsmith

Every year, hunters and anglers quietly fund wildlife conservation in America through licenses, stamps, and equipment taxes. Most people have no idea how much of the country’s conservation system exists because of them.
