Anders Celsius (1701-1744) invented the Celsius scale of temperature in this possibly medieval stone building in central Uppsala, Sweden. He observed the natural freezing point, and boiling points, and set his temperature scale at 100 and 0 at these points (it was reversed in 1745 on a suggestion by his colleague at the University of Uppsala, Carl Linnaeus, the botanist). The building could have been an alms house and hospital for the poor but records are poor on the subject. At the very least it predates the 1643 realignment of city streets. Incidentally Uppsala was likely the first European city after the fall of Rome that built new permanent stone paved streets.
