Hajeh Ne’meh is 100 years old. She survived Israel’s massacre in Deir Qanoun al-Nahr yesterday. She says she had only stepped out to buy bread. When she returned, her home was shattered and the neighbourhood had turned into a massacre scene. “What can I do?” she asks through tears. “These children used to play in the road beside me. I used to give them sweets…” “How can this be allowed? Fun day out for our camp kids! The Sameer Project team took our camp boys for a visit to the beach. The sea is one of the only places for people to relax in Gaza. Trips like these are rare due to safety reasons and sporadic bombing but luckily this day trip went well and smooth. Providing activities for our camp kids is important because they all come from families with one or more patients. Daily life is not easy for patients in Gaza so we try to provide relief and fun to the kids when we can. In Juhapura, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a 70-year-old man identified as Zaheer Shaikh died after being taken into police custody, leading to serious allegations of custodial torture and conflicting claims from police and family members. Zaheer Shaikh had reportedly been arrested in connection with a case involving alleged possession of around 500 kg of beef. Earlier, videos showing police action against some accused in the case had circulated widely on social media. Before his death, a video recorded by his son surfaced online in which Zaheer claimed that police personnel assaulted him in custody. In the video, he alleged that officers beat him, pulled his beard, kicked him in his private parts, and demanded money as a bribe. He specifically named an officer identified as Akshay in the recording. Family members and local residents have alleged that Zaheer was subjected to custodial violence and abuse. According to them, he named several police personnel before he died while undergoing treatment at SVP Hospital in Ahmedabad. Police, however, have denied the torture allegations and stated that Zaheer’s condition deteriorated after he allegedly consumed a high dose of medication while in custody, which they say led to his hospitalisation and subsequent death. @TheObserverPost
