They are preserving culture, carrying forward memories of home, and protecting an identity that others have tried so hard to erase. This summer at the Hasan School in Refaat Alareer Camp, the teens in the camp gathered around dough, za'atar, and generations of Palestinian tradition. Palestinian cuisine tells the story of a people deeply connected to their land. Even in the heat of summer, with empty stomachs and the daily hardships of life in Gaza, these young students continue to gather to memorize the Quran. Their determination is extraordinary. Something as simple as a piece of fruit can provide much needed vitamins, energy, and encouragement to keep going - but right now with the high prices in markets, this is a luxury many cannot afford. Parents in Gaza carry unbelievable burdens, alone. During the genocide he was also injured. Since then, the trauma of repeated displacement, bombardment, hunger, and the collapse of Gaza's healthcare and social support systems has taken a devastating toll. His condition has deteriorated. Atta has lost the ability to speak and now struggles to walk. His mother is raising him on her own. She is not only trying to keep him safe and fed, but also trying to replace services that no longer exist. The therapists, specialists, and support systems that once gave children like Atta a chance to thrive have been destroyed or are no longer accessible. Today, she is exhausted. Simply asking for help. Atta urgently needs medication, a proper mattress to protect his fragile body, and specialized food to meet his nutritional needs. Children are dying from hunger. Mothers are miscarrying because their bodies no longer have enough nutrition to sustain a pregnancy. Newborn babies are dying within their first weeks of life because there is simply not enough food for them or their mothers. This is what starvation looks like. With no baths or showers, children are showering in public. A common scene in Gaza is to see children sharing a bit of soap and using a pipe of water. For families living in displacement camps with limited water and almost no access to cleaning supplies, hygiene is about far more than comfort. It is about preventing disease, reducing infections, and preserving dignity in the midst of an ongoing manmade catastrophe. On June 16, The Sameer Project distributed 80 detergent parcels to 80 displaced families living in Jerusalem Camp, in Tal Al-Hawa, Gaza City. This initiative cost a total of $3,170 after 11% commission, with each hygiene and cleaning parcel filed with laundry detergent, dish soap, bar soap, a broom and other essentials costing $39 each. Every hygiene parcel helps families wash clothing, bedding, cooking utensils, and the small spaces they now are forced to call home. These basic supplies protect health, restore a sense of normalcy, and allow a mother, a wife, a husband, the children to feel like they have a well kept space. In every water distribution, there are people with injuries or disabilities who are forced to queue for hours and carry heavy jerrycans because there’s no one else to do it. Here in the scorching hot summer heat, This mother spends her days baking over a clay oven, surrounded by smoke, earning just 15 shekels or about $5 per day, to care for her seven orphaned children.
