On International Women’s Day, we often celebrate women who have “made it” into leadership. But what we rarely pause to ask is: Who had to step back along the way? At the in-person segment of Spoorthi, we reflected on this through a Power Walk — an exercise that made privilege and barriers visible in real time. A straight line slowly shifted. Some moved ahead with ease. Others had to step back. Not because of effort. But because of systems. The line did not remain straight. This Women’s Day is not only about representation. It is about examining the structures that shape leadership journeys long before women enter decision-making rooms. Because equity in health leadership demands more than individual resilience. It demands structural change. #IPHBengaluru #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2026 #WomenInHealth #HealthLeadership

We note with deep respect the posthumous conferment of the Padma Shri on T. T. Jagannathan, recognising his extraordinary contributions to Indian industry, innovation, and consumer safety. An eminent institution builder, T. T. Jagannathan played a defining role in shaping the TTK Group into one of India’s most trusted enterprises. Through decades of leadership, he guided the organisation’s transformation into a globally recognised brand, driven by innovation, technical rigour, and an unwavering commitment to quality and safety. Beyond industry, he remained deeply supportive of efforts that carried forward T. T. Narasimhan’s vision for public health, enabling initiatives that strengthened education, research, and policy engagement. At the Institute of Public Health Bengaluru, this legacy is reflected in the T. T. Narasimhan School of Advanced Studies (TTN SoAS at IPH Bengaluru), established in partnership with the T. T. Narasimhan family as a platform for collaboration, leadership development, and advancing public health practice. The Padma Shri honours a body of work that bridged innovation, institution-building, and public purpose, leaving an enduring impact across sectors and generations. For more information on TTN SoAS at IPH Bengaluru please visit: ttnsoas.iphindia.org #IPHBengaluru #TTNSoAS

On 3rd December, the Centre for Adivasi Health (CAH) hosted an inspiring gathering of Adivasi leaders, scholars, and representatives from forest-associated Adivasi communities across Karnataka. The event was organised in response to an invitation from the Australian Consulate General, Bengaluru (@AusCGBengaluru) facilitated through Kranthi Vysyaraju to enable an interaction between visiting Australian Indigenous authors Julie Janson and Philip McLaren and local Adivasi leaders. The convening brought together many first-generation Adivasi scholars and leaders from the 12 forest-associated Adivasi communities of the state, including several early-career Adivasi women and young scholars. Their reflections on identity, rights, and navigating the intersections of tradition and modernity created a rich and meaningful cross-cultural dialogue. Ms Janson and Mr McLaren shared grounded stories from their own life journeys and community experiences, offering parallels and contrasts that resonated deeply with the participants. Earlier in the day, the delegation visited the Karnataka State Tribal Research Institute, Mysore (@kstrikarnataka), where Dr. Krishnamurthy, Research Officer, oriented them to the institute’s work and its ongoing engagement with Adivasi communities. We extend our sincere thanks to KSTRI for their support in mediating this cross-cultural exchange. Heartfelt appreciation to everyone at CAH who made this possible—including Mahadev C, Muthaiah V, Pushpaja Y. R, Tanya Seshadri, Praveen Rao S., Meena Putturaj, and all colleagues and community members who contributed to the gathering. The discussions highlighted the value of creating shared spaces where Adivasi voices lead conversations and exchange experiences with Indigenous communities globally. #IPHBengaluru #IPHEvents #CommunityCare

On 28 November, Dr. Kaushik S and Dr. Lathadevi Chilgod facilitated a training workshop for 70+ Primary Health Care Officers (PHCOs) in Mysuru, organised by the Rural Literacy and Health Programme (an NGO working on community development, health, and education). The morning session focused on non-communicable diseases, using participatory activities to discuss risk factors, gaps, and solutions within the NP-NCD programme including their individual level challenges. The afternoon session built soft skills through a role-play exercise, highlighting communication, empathy, time management, and intersectoral coordination. The PHCOs shared challenges around workload and time constraints, and discussed strategies for improving outreach to marginalised communities. The workshop helped surface practical, context-specific solutions such as better task prioritisation and stronger team coordination. During the post workshop debrief, a few participants expressed increased confidence in applying soft skills during field interactions. #IPHBengaluru #PublicHealth #IPHEvents #CapacityBuilding #PrimaryCare

Day 3 of the #RealistResearchBlendedCourse began with two of our participants volunteering to share their insights and provide an overview of the Day 2 sessions. The workshop then moved to a glimpse of other theory-driven methods. One of the sessions was led by Dr Vaibhav Agavane and focused on the approach called “theory of change. ” He noted that every programme or intervention carries both implicit and explicit ideas about how change is expected to occur, and that a theory of change helps make those assumptions and the programme’s logic explicit. Through an example, he illustrated the various elements of a theory of change. Dr Upendra Bhojani described another theory-driven method, Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). He explained how QCA combines the strengths of both qualitative and quantitative approaches to identify deterministic outcomes and examine causal pathways. Drawing on an example, he walked through the different components of QCA including cases, outcomes, conditions, and the construction of a truth table. Dr Pragati Hebbar delved into what a realist synthesis is, and how it differs from a realist evaluation or a conventional systematic review. She explained the process of realist synthesis and underscored that realist synthesis is theorydriven, it does not place literature in a strict hierarchy, and allows the use of a wide range of sources, She highlighted both the strengths and the limitations of realist synthesis and demonstrated how to conduct a realist synthesis through an example. Following this session, the participants spent time reading a selected article on realist synthesis. Afterwards, they broke into small groups to critically appraise a published realist synthesis study. Once group work was complete, each team presented their findings to the rest of the participants. The course concluded with an overview of resources and support for realist evaluation practitioners, including HSGSHAPES and RAMESES, followed by certificate distribution and a dedicated feedback session. @Chaudharyadit23 @AvishekHazra23, @commed_doc @MonicaShriv @punitrd @HiralkarSakshi @brynne_gilmore #IPHBengaluru #TTNSoAS #RealistResearch2025 #IPHEvents #blendedlearning

Day 2 of the #RealistResearchBlendedCourse opened with a short recap from two volunteer participants, who shared their most important takeaways from Day 1 of the in-person session. This was followed by a session led by Dr. Prashanth N.S., who walked us through the steps of conducting a realist evaluation from theory development to empirical testing and finally theory refinement and synthesis. He emphasised the importance of developing a priori theories, which can be constructed using multiple sources such as literature reviews, programme documents, stakeholder interviews, hunches informed by field interactions, and empirical data. Dr. Brynne Gilmore led a detailed session on data analysis and synthesis in realist evaluation and unpacked its methodological aspects. She introduced the teacher–learner approach, theory-driven interviewing, and the importance of asking questions in the right way. She also discussed in depth the concept of retroductive analysis to identify hidden causal factors, which draws on a combination of induction, deduction, and insights from intuitive reasoning (abduction). After the session, participants worked in groups on a few casestudy examples to analyze data, refine the program theory, and apply their learnings. They then shared their insights with all participants.Professor Bruno Marchal demonstrated, through a variety of real-world examples, how realist methods can be applied across multiple levels of health systems. Finally, Professor Arnab Mukherji discussed a case study to illustrate how patterns emerging from data can shape development of initial program theory for realist research.  @Chaudharyadit23 @AvishekHazra23, @commed_doc @MonicaShriv @punitrd @HiralkarSakshi @brynne_gilmore #IPHBengaluru #TTNSoAS #RealistResearch2025 #IPHEvents #blendedlearning
