The Independent Policing Oversight Authority is Constitutionally and statutorily established to ensure that police are held accountable to the public in performance of their functions, and that the National Police Service strive to achieve the highest possible standards of professionalism. The Authority recognizes the massive task that was bestowed on the Maraga Taskforce which was formed to entrench reforms in the National Police Service, the Kenya Prisons Service and the National Youth Service. The Authority appreciates the achievements of the Taskforce that culminated into a report handed to His Excellency the President, Dr. William Ruto, C.G.H., and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces of the republic of Kenya, this afternoon. IPOA commends the Taskforce for accomplishing its Terms of Reference and in particular, its consideration of 26 past IPOA reports on monitoring and inspections, which sought to address police welfare, tooling and equipment, housing, renumeration and automation of all policing services and general professionalism in the Service. The Authority expresses confidence that in the same spirit H.E the President, appointed the Taskforce, has assured the uptake and full implementation of its recommendations. IPOA offers unequivocal support towards implementation of the report bearing in mind that matters that would improve the welfare of police officers, and further enhance day to day operations of the NPS, would lead to a better police service that is citizen-centric. The Authority also wishes to thank the President, for nominating Ms. Doreen Muthaura who sits on IPOA Board, to the team that delivered this milestone report.
