I think cigarettes are a metaphor for the three's relationship.
In ep 8, Nanjo was furious when Mokyeon took his cigarette, but in ep 29, he doesn't get angry even when it's taken, and he freezes when Mokyeon hands it back.
It shows the change in Nanjo's feelings.

whatever happens will likely be what turns Mokyeon from being hopeful + desperate to talk to Nanjo into hopeless + shut off from the world. can't wait!!!

@SoonChick1210 yes, and then Mokyeon threatened to hurt Sunhwa and told Nanjo he loses interest in things quickly, so Nanjo understandably got turned off of the idea and didn't rush to clarify anything 🤣

Nanjo made that proposal assuming he would stay by Mokyeon's side, but Mokyeon might have misunderstood his intentions.

@SoonChick1210 crucially, Mok assumes Nanjo means that they'll both go their separate ways versus Nanjo continuing to see Mok, but Nanjo never actually confirms or denies this. I doubt Nanjo had fully considered it himself, but Mok jumping to conclusions ends the conversation either way

@SoonChick1210 I think it was a split-second decision... Nanjo hadn't really considered it properly, but his gut was telling him that something had changed and so he acted on it. I think a part of him knew Mokyeon was enjoying their relationship and so was going off of that...

I think Nanjo already wants to leave Sunhwa at this point.
What I wonder is why Nanjo even asked this question.
Even if Nanjo leaves Sunhwa, Mokyeon has no reason to let him go.

@SoonChick1210 Nanjo , who previously firmly refused to kiss Mokyeon out of disgust, then initiated kisses twice in Chapter 24. There was no good reason to do it once if he didn't want to kiss Mokyeon, and no reason to do it twice if he didn't enjoy the first time 🤷🏻♀️

if anyone's only read the Borderline manhwa once, I'd highly recommend rereading it! I read it carefully the first time, but I enjoyed my second read much more because there were so many details and subtleties I hadn't appreciated fully. It also pays to keep a close eye on Nanjo!
