I will never understand why NZ employment law only has 1-3 days leave for one of the most traumatic events in a person’s life.

@irisshackleton When my older son died, younger son had only been working for a few months. Because it was less than 6 months he wasn't entitled to bereavement leave and didn't have much annual leave so had to take leave without pay

I once had an employee whose mum suddenly died in the UK. Heartbreaking circumstances. I paid for her to go to the UK the next day & take as much time as she needed bc there wasn’t any other family. I never expected to be repaid but she later did.

A good employer will play it by ear & not be a complete arsehole at the worst times in your life. I don't know what they think you're going to be doing at work while you're grieving?
