The second time I hike the Sea-to-Sky Summit in Vancouver, I am 25. The first time I hike this mountain, I am 15, six months post-operation from major spinal surgery. I just got the go-ahead from my doctors to go on longer walks. However, I am still barred from running, lifting more than 10 pounds, and participating in any activity that requires physical impact. Five months earlier, I had just finished learning how to walk again. I am hiking this mountain on a pathway that the bulletin board at the beginning of the trail promised would be easy. I keep walking, but the trail progressively turns into more rocks than soil, more tree trunks than wildflowers. It doesn’t take long for my parents and me to realize we’ve ended up on the full summit hike—the one for advanced hikers. At this point, we are too deep into the mountain to go back down, leaving us with no choice but to hike the whole way up and take the gondola down. For the next three hours, we are all silent. All I think about is putting one foot in front of the other. Then I fall. I feel my body hit the ground, and I could swear I hear my bones echo with the metal rods in my spine. Four months later, I find out that I need repeat surgery because the metal in my spine had not fully mended with my bones. They had been loose, moving for the past few months, pinching parts of my nervous system. I would have another surgery a few months later and go through the same process of learning how to walk again. I would end up spending the majority of my high school years not being allowed to run and being terrified to fall. I’ve spent many hours contemplating whether that fall was the major cause of the failure of that first surgery. I’ve also spent many hours trying to stop contemplating the fate of that fall. The second time I hike the Sea-to-Sky Summit in Vancouver, I am running up the mountain. I’m chasing the clouds, and when I catch up, I’m rewarded with rain. My body moves faster than I think, and I look out ahead of me.

I just had to put in my password *three* times to view my classes because of some VPN-less thing @UBC added Unreal setup; once we have this, Workday, and the co-op portal going we may be in the running for worst infra at a Canadian uni

just signed my NG offer :') i preach a lot about how i don't believe in the grind75/whatever method of grinding out LC the true 'grokking' abilities come from your **lectures** and you get good at programming from doing **real programming** on **real systems** (proof)
