In early 2003, in a WP piece, I argued „First Wars First“- „let‘s complete our joint mission in AFG before tackling Iraq“. Similar challenge today: attacking Iran before eliminating the Russian threat against Ukraine has weakened the West, and damages Nato. And helps Russia.

واقعا در عجبم از برخی خود سیاستمدار پندارها و البته برخی از ایرانی هایی که جدیدا شدن ذوب در ولایت زلنسکی. این آقا با یک طوماری از القاب در بایوی خودش نوشته: " آیا با توجه به تغییرات عظیم ژئواستراتژیک، ممکن است که حفاظت نظامی آلمان و شرکای اتحادیه اروپا در آینده کمتر توسط ایالات متحده/ناتو و بیشتر توسط همسایه شرقی ما اوکراین، که قدرتمندترین ارتش اروپا را دارد، تأمین شود؟" در پاسخ برایش نوشتم: "کاش اینقدر ساده بود که امنیت آلمان و اروپا را به اوکراین بسپاریم و راحت بخوابیم. اوکراین همین الان برای بقای خودش در حال جنگیدن است و بدون حمایت گسترده آمریکا (تسلیحات، ماهواره، اطلاعات و پول) تا امروز دوام نمی‌آورد. حالا شما می‌خواهید همان کشور جنگ‌زده و فرسوده، «سپر امنیتی» آلمان و اتحادیه اروپا بشود؟ رویای قشنگی است، ولی واقعیت تلخ‌تر از این حرفهاست. حتی اگر اوکراین جنگ را ببرد، سال‌ها طول می‌کشد تا بتواند ارتشش را بازسازی کند. نیروی هوایی قوی، چتر هسته‌ای، لجستیک جهانی و قدرت پروجکشن؟ این‌ها هنوز فقط در اختیار آمریکاست. این حرف‌ها بیشتر از سر ناامیدی از ترامپ و کاهش حضور آمریکا گفته می‌شود تا یک تحلیل جدی. اروپا نمی‌تواند با آرزو و فانتزی، امنیت خودش را تأمین کند. یا باید هزینه واقعی دفاعی بپردازد، یا همچنان به آمریکا وابسته بماند. راه دیگری ندارد." راننده تاکسی های ایران رو سیاستمدار و صدراعظم میکردن در آلمان، نتیجه های بهتری عایدشون می‌شد. #جاویدشاه

Könnte es sein, dass angesichts der gewaltigen geostrategischen Verschiebungen der militärische Schutz Deutschlands und der EU Partner künftig weniger durch USA/Nato als durch unseren östlichen Nachbarn Ukraine mit der schlagkräftigsten Armee in Europa abgesichert werden wird?

@PatriciaAlexann No one has suggested that China should offer troops as security guarantees. But if Trump/Nato accept the Russian demand of no Nato troops in Ukraine - who could potentially monitor a ceasefire/ line of control ? That’s where contingents from third countries might play a role.

Could it be, Wolfgang? It's finally dawning on @ischinger. I guess he doesn't think Chinese troops will be the ultimate security guarantee anymore. Progress

@Neuro24de @Flo_Wirtz_fan Es sieht aktuell nicht danach aus, eher im Gegenteil: Russland wird seine Kriegsziele wohl nicht erreichen können und hat damit dann im Klartext verloren.

@Flo_Wirtz_fan @ischinger Für den Fall dass Russland die ganze Ukraine einnimmt, auf jeden Fall, gerade auch deshalb ist die Unterstützung der Ukraine jetzt wichtig.

The problem appears to be that the approach unilaterally selected by the US and Israel has actually not led to regime change. A military regime replacing a clerical one?

Respectfully, Professor Ischinger, I compared it to a divorce - the bully isn't gone yet, but badly damaged. The Islamic Republic is a defanged tiger, having lost its paltry pre-war fighter fleet, with no air defenses left, a navy (11 ships) sitting at the bottom of the gulf, half its missiles and 2/3 of their launchers destroyed, it's nuke program set back ten years. Only its drones are left. Three layers of its mass murdering intelligentsia is gone - so they've lost any semblance of brain power and experience, leaving a dozen fragmented factions. Still it's most serious danger lies from within - No population likes having foreign mercenaries brought in to massacre its population - which is why they're hanging an average of three or four children a day, as a form of terror, like Rome with its crucifix. Imagine how Germans would feel if that were to happen - they would feel occupied by an evil, foreign force - which is how about 90% of Iranians (not vested in the gov't) feel. Can they continue to send missiles like a wounded animal, short term - yes. Their only real power comes from time & the West - Western media, politicians, perpetually cautious, whose reticence serves as complicity, an American public stung by the Iraq experience, sick of forever wars, potentially a Democrat to replace Trump, and the like. @CameronTousi @FareedZakaria You actually believe they are now „rid of that bully”? No sign of that yet, I am afraid to say. More the opposite - a more hardlined regime with additional regional (Hormus) leverage etc . . You must be kidding.

They’ve lived with a bully that’s threatened them for decades. They are now rid of that bully thanks to the US and Israel. Some reporters had stated the Saudi’s were promoting the bombings with the US for similar reasons. Qatar was against it as was Turkey. Qatar has even changed its mind. IRGC is not welcomed even in Qatar, as well as the other Gulf states, kicked out of all. The result is lesser harboring of terrorists and potential terrorists and better alignment with the West. Short term pain but long term benefit. Like a divorce from an abusive spouse. So I was not kidding.

@FareedZakaria has nailed it once again. Trust, once lost, is hard to rebuild. And remember : trust is the currency of diplomacy . . .

@CameronTousi @FareedZakaria Do they really? The Gulf States appreciate their dramatic loss of security, of major sources of revenue, of a reputation as a tourism paradise? Are you kidding?

@FareedZakaria How are the criticisms unearned? Did they show an iota of support for the US military action in Iran, and the Iranian people massacred my their own government? Trump plays the role of Churchill today in the Middle East, and the Gulf States who actually live there appreciate it.
