My first encounter with Phillip Marshall 25 years ago wasn’t just memorable — it was a defining learning moment. @aburcham04 sent me to a fall two-a-days morning practice (yes, that long ago) to gather post-practice audio for the evening Sports Call radio show. Meredith Jenkins brought Coach Tuberville over near one of the athletic training tents. Tubbs gave a quick recap of practice and opened the floor for questions. Similar to the recorder he’s holding in this photo, Phillip quickly turned his off, looked at me, and said, “I’m not going to ask your questions for you.” Tubbs glanced at him, then at me, and joked, “Go easy on the new kid, Phillip.” And it made sense — if a story was about to break in those days, Phillip had it long before others knew it existed. Still a little puzzled, I went ahead and asked a handful of questions. Later, Phillip pulled me aside and explained that he knew I was heading back to use that same audio on our 4 p.m. radio show. This was the pre-social media era — and he understood that anything he asked could air before his story ever hit the paper. I realized he wasn’t trying to embarrass me. He was teaching me to be prepared and to respect the craft. I can only imagine the untold stories he knew that never saw daylight. Thinking back now makes me even more grateful to still see faces like @ITATJason , @BMattAU , and @JayGTate continuing to provide quality journalism — guys I also once watched and learned from at a distance. Rest in peace, P. Marsh.

Credit to Pearl and the staff—what an outstanding defensive effort. Also, it might not show up in the box score, but successfully challenging that goaltending call was a huge momentum swing back in AU’s favor.

@jashercox I’m amazed how swiftly he and so many others have forgotten about the division that January 6th caused. The current person in the White House planned that party.

While everyone is here, it’s also odd to hear him claim that no president divided the country by race more than Obama. Dear @coachbrucepearl, telling black athletes “I don’t want you working at Subway, I want you owning five” might sound motivational, but it came off as patronizing—it’s a framing stereotype about where young black men start. Respectfully, I’m hoping you’ll recant this statement.
