Natural experiments, like the closure of the Isthmus of Panamá, can reveal the fascinating mechanisms of bacterial evolution. Our new paper shows how horizontal gene transfer helped chemosynthetic symbionts survive in the Caribbean Sea after this event. journals.plos.org/plosgenetics/a…

You might have heard of lucinid clams. Beautiful white clams that can be found at the beach, in seagrass beds, or in mangrove roots.

Excited to share our paper on a root-endophytic #N2fixing bacterium enabling #seagrass Posidonia to thrive in the N-poor Med Sea: Did its ancestors help seagrasses to emerge? #bluecarbon #symbioses @MarineMicrobio @EawagResearch & HYDRA -> @Nature: nature.com/articles/s4158…

I just got an email from someone in the US asking me for advice on how to obtain samples from Latin American countries without having to recognise sample providers w/ authorship in the resulting paper. Needless to say I was furious. Friends, please don't do this #colonialscience
