earthquake GCR / megaquake theory explained for dummies in the past few days theres been quite some attention on @BlerGoom and @mxdondevivo warning of an imminent mag 10 massive earthquake (never seen before) in the nw pacific rim region which would be an extreme tail risk event that would significantly cripple markets and cause huge damage in the region while new to the topic ive been doing my part to understand where they're coming from (pls correct if i got it totally wrong). my map here shows 6.5+ earthquakes in the region in the past 15 months. boiled down to basics: the pacific plate has been moving to NW/NNW while being locked in the southern part causing a strange silence in south pacific/south america which is usually a seismically extremely active spot. on any given year there are usually multiple 6.5 happening there, while its in total silence now. on the other side, we have seen a rare pattern of activity in places which have been calmer previously, with 7+ quakes happening at all crucial points (tohoku subduction zone, kuril-kamchatka trench, aleutian trench and alaska) and a huge 8.8 in kamchatka, which is one of the 5 strongest quakes in the past 80 years and on record. last week we had a 7.6 + a consecutive swarm of earthquakes with activity very similar to the buildup to the 2011 great tohoku earthquake which was a 9.1 and damaged fukushima nuclear plant. japan has issued a megaquake warning for the first time since 2011. this all combined with increased anomalous space weather (solar stroms) which has been linked to trigger seismic events on earth leads to an elevated risk of a very large seismic event in the nw of the pacific with all of the market events on the map being foreshocks to the big one. earthquakes are very hard to predict in their timing and magnitude but one can agree we have only like 100+ years of data and the current setup looks very much anomalous and the tail risk is definitely much higher than usual. wdwt chat?
