Robert Lewandowski, around five years ago, publicly stated his desire to join FC Barcelona in pursuit of getting closer to the Ballon d'Or, going as far as claiming that Bayern Munich would never find a better striker and even warning that blocking his departure could deter world-class players from joining the club in the future.
Five years later, that narrative has aged poorly. Bayern now have Harry Kane, effectively the most complete striker of the modern era, matching elite goal output while also operating as a far superior playmaker, elevating the entire attacking structure, working relentlessly for the team, and carrying himself without ego as a true ambassador of the game.
Fast forward to today, Kane finds himself in contention for both the UEFA Champions League and the Ballon d'Or, while Lewandowski, since making that move to Barcelona, has seen his individual standing decline, failing to return to even the Ballon d’Or shortlist, a move that was meant to elevate him but instead led in the opposite direction.
