Interesting parallels between Musk’s cost-cutting/auditing campaign in the U.S. federal government and China’s anti-corruption drive from 2013 onwards (which later became institutionalized and persists to this day). The latter was, over the long run, a pretty substantial success—there’s a large academic literature on its positive effects—despite being enormously disruptive and widely hated within the Chinese bureaucracy early on. Maybe there’s a chance DOGE will be as well? Not saying it will be, but the comparison is interesting to me.

@ZhangTaisu I’m not sure. It doesn’t seem legally constituted as far as I can tell. But this is more of a genuine question because I don’t really know what it takes to constitute a new department and legally hire staff in the US.

@itamann Isn’t he? There are lots of legal attacks one can lodge against DOGE, but not being a legally recognizable government entity doesn’t seem to be one of them.

@ZhangTaisu I’m not thinking of many shades, only one: is he acting in a public capacity under the law? I think that’s a necessary (but not sufficient) condition

@itamann Sure, the Musk campaign has many, many shades of moral grey (and black) to it, but reducing waste and fraud seems to be at least one of the major goals, is it not?
