ITER teams are linking the tokamak’s 18 toroidal field coils into a single structure engineered to withstand enormous electromagnetic forces. Working with millimetre precision, each connection helps build the magnetic system that will confine the plasma.

Vacuum Vessel Gravity Support #1 was lowered into the tokamak pit this week and successfully set into position. These supports are designed to bear the weight of the VV while accommodating radial, toroidal, and vertical movement caused by thermal expansion of the plasma chamber.

Big moves on the fusion front. Vacuum Vessel Sector #1 was successfully upended using Upending Tool #1 — a critical and highly precise operation. Transfer of the sector to SSAT #2 is on track for completion by the end of this week.

A 1,200-tonne ITER sector module—heavier than two Airbus A380s—has been lowered into the tokamak pit and is now undergoing millimetre-precision alignment. Engineers shift the coils and vacuum vessel in tiny 5 mm steps until everything reaches its exact position.
