For the third year in a row I’m putting down one of our pets that we’ve had since I was a teenager. More often than not, it is me who has to bring them to say goodbye, because my mom can’t handle the emotional pain. It makes me realize how much we as humans struggle with death and finality. Not necessarily because of our fear of what our loved ones may face on the other side, but because of our fear of the emotional pain of missing them. Seeing our cat struggle so much right now tells me it’s the right time to let him go, but that doesn’t make the anxiety of “could I have done more” or “will I be okay when he’s gone” feel any easier. Being a human is strange. Having feelings is strange. I’m thankful every day for being able to compartmentalize and rationalize. It also makes me realize that each of us every day are facing something difficult. One of the many reasons we have to be supportive and kind to one another, instead of tearing down strangers.
