Okay but this woman’s closet is actually insane. Multiple huge racks packed floor to ceiling with shoes. Hundreds of pairs.

This is why, in principle, I disagree with the concept of citizenship by naturalisation, especially when the person in question is an adult. You’ll never know what it means to be Canadian unless you were born there or grew up there, attended kindergarten and learned their children rhymes, the slangs, your social media by default is focused on Canada, Canadian culture, politics and history is something you deeply care about, etc. A good example is how you feel on a public holiday that is symbolic in Canada, something like independence celebration or a commemoration. If you feel nothing or it’s just like any other day, then you’re not Canadian regardless of what your passport says. One other example is how you feel when you land at the airport in your supposed hometown. Does the ride from the airport make you feel the same way you feel when you’re in your actual hometown where your parents and grandparents were born? If the answer is no, then you’re not Canadian regardless of what your passport says. You definitely won’t put your life on the line if that is what it will cost to defend your country during war because it is not your country; it is not your land; the connection is not there. The land does not even know you. This applies to every other country more so when you need to learn a new language to meet the legal requirements for citizenship. If you ask most immigrants, a second passport is merely for international travel convenience especially if they’re from third world countries.

I never know what to say when people ask me where I’m from as a Canadian. Do I say Toronto?
