This is exactly why so many translations feel off these days. True localization should be reader-oriented, invisible and seamless—serving the original text and the audience. But this translator made it all about their ego, making themselves far too visible at the expense of accuracy. I get that translators have their own interpretations, but when there are established norms readers expect, it’s not the translator’s place to arbitrarily break them. And when native speakers are telling you you’re wrong, that’s when you listen, not double down.

Here's what happened I bet - translator decided they "know best" cause they wanna feel special, 7s didn't verify anything and now books are already (being) printed. Will avoid this translator in the future - gives same "localization" energy as recent games translation scandals.

This is a nice explanation, thank you. But the question is: did you get the author’s approval for these changes? With all due respect, if the author did not grant you explicit approval, you cannot change the protagonist’s name to fit a translator’s subjective interpretation.

some additional context that went into the carefully considered choice of rendering 安折 as “anzhe” 🧵🪡 firstly, anzhe is not a person, legally or physically. all his documents say an ze, and that’s who he’s assumed to be - the name “anzhe” exists only in his head.

(Contains spoilers for Little Mushroom) I don’t know if Seven Seas editors or the translator just forgot—or couldn’t be bothered to read the original text carefully—but An Zhe (安折)’s name is directly derived from An Ze (安泽). An Ze is human! “An” is his last name! For context: An Zhe’s name was given to him by An Ze when he first took human form. An Ze saw him as a younger version of himself and named him An Zhe, which is why “An” is clearly the shared surname. What is the translator even talking about with “Anzhe is Anzhe because he’s a mushroom and like Jesus has no last name”?

@jupy314 Hello again! After further internal review, there is no mistake: the spellings “Anzhe” and “An Ze” in our edition are intentional. Sorry for earlier confusion on this.
