i get that the reader prob didn’t mean anything bad by saying this but it IS crazy to call 60k a short read lol, especially on ao3 where ppl post 2k-10k pieces all the time

@squidias it’s not the same as commenting, i agree, but if ppl are gonna say something publicly ON someone’s fic, they shouldn’t be surprised if the author sees it and is upset

@itsrikover *My* bookmarks are largely positive, bc I don't bookmark things I don't Really like, but I find it silly to equate "7/10" or "I liked this but-", in the *bookmarker notes* that authors don't get notified abt, to going into an author's dms or comments or @-ing them

@strawori Like my time is just as valuable as my money, yk? Unless your end point is that fanfic should never be critiqued at all, which I find incredibly bleak as a view on fanworks as a creative artform

@squidias fundamentally we treat fandom differently so we will probably not come to an understanding on this lol, but in any case, how you comment in bookmarks is your prerogative, i just think it’s odd for people to get mad when writers think some comments are rude and/or uncalled for

@squidias actually i do consider fandoms, even huge ones, to be more like big circles of friends, acquaintances, friends of friends, etc. even if i don’t know everyone, most of them are still people i could be friends with, not just chefs at some random event

@squidias i mean yeah, ofc not everyone is gonna like every fic, but it’s rude to rate hobbyist work. like you can totally be rude if you want to, but i view it similarly to my cake analogy. someone’s home baked cake CAN be bad, but it is in fact rude to say it to their face

@itsrikover "it's ok 6/10" isn't "this is a waste of time". Like regardless of my opinion on bookmarks and author spaces, those things aren't equivalent. And, as an author, some people not finding your fic worth reading is just reality! Or else every fic would have millions of hits and kudos

@squidias if a friend brought a cake to a party and you ate it, you wouldn’t say “hmmm decent but could be baked better, 5/10” within their earshot because that’s rude, right? you could be right, but you wouldn’t want to shit on their work and effort UNLESS they asked for feedback

@squidias 1. yes it’s happening, most of the screenshots i’ve seen are of ratings without any reasoning
2. have you considered that the writer’s time/effort is also valuable? ofc you can think that some fics are a waste of your time, but surely you see how it would be rude to say that?

I'm a Known hater, so my opinion might not matter, but I've always understood ao3 bookmarks as a space Not For The Author. We don't get notifications when someone bookmarks a work and that feels intentional...
