For several hours today, thousands of people in the Opebi-Ikeja axis were stranded, some stuck in their cars, others trekking long distances. There were people who trekked from Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way to Allen; some trekked from Customs to Opebi. You want to know why? Because President Bola Tinubu was commissioning a bridge built by Babajide Sanwo-Olu. A bridge. A common bridge was why taxpayers suffered for hours. Every now and then, you see signs that many of the people in governance are tone-deaf, with scant understanding of the essence of governance: the people. You built a bridge for the people; why suffer them first before letting them use it? Why do we need a president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces to open a bridge? And why does this have to be done at the expense of public comfort? Who did this to us as a people?

Nothing personal, but Nigeria is one of the countries where I found it particularly difficult to access my own money as a foreigner. During my visit, I held accounts with Absa Group, Equity Bank, and Standard Chartered. Even withdrawing a modest amount like $200 was often a challenge. I would spend several minutes waiting at ATMs, only to find that cash had run out, especially when attempting to withdraw larger amounts equivalent to $500 or more in naira. On the payments side, the situation was equally frustrating. Many local restaurants and hotels do not readily accept international debit or credit cards. On one occasion in Abuja, after dinner, we had to send someone out to exchange $200 into naira just so we could settle the bill. When he couldn’t find a bureau de change, he ended up purchasing naira informally from individuals on the street. While I acknowledge and respect the impressive growth of fintech innovation in Nigeria, these experiences point to deeper systemic challenges, particularly around cash accessibility and the usability of international payment systems for foreigners.

-No ECG machines in hospitals. -Only about 1 or 2 functional MRI machines in public hospitals in the entire country. -No defibrillators in hospitals. -No ambulances in public hospitals and where they exist, they are for VIPs only. -No basic medical equipment in hospitals such as gloves, syringes or plasters. Patients have to buy from outside sources. -Doctors are owed salaries for months. -Hazard pay for doctors is either unpaid or grossly insufficient. But air ambulance is the first step they choose to take. If there was an Olympic event for putting the cart before the horse, we would easily take the gold medal.

I used to think mass hypnosis was just fiction. Until the APC (NADECO BOYS) came into power in 2015. GEJ didn’t fail because he lacked policies. He failed because he couldn’t cast a spell on us. Now look at Tinubu. A normal society would push back harder. But here we are — accepting, adjusting, coping. Has to be hypnosis.

From now until the 2027 elections, do not expect peace. In ADC, in PDP, in LP, expect no peace. And Tinubu’s hands will be all over it. Anyone who expects any less must be naive. Tinubu is president today ONLY because of the alliance he forged with disgruntled politicians and opposition parties. His 2011-election party bit the dust after the then ACN’s planned merger with other opposition parties, chiefly Buhari’s CPC, was scuttled by inordinate ambitions and unyielding interests. His then candidate Nuhu Ribadu placed a distant third with just 5.4% of total votes cast. His 2007-election party AC recorded a similar failure, following another unsuccessful merger with Buhari’s ANPP. Like Ribadu, candidate Atiku Abubakar placed a woeful third with only 7.45% of votes. But following a merger of three parties and the breakaway factions of two parties in 2013, 5.4% in 2011 became 53.96% for Tinubu’s candidate Muhammadu Buhari in 2015. Without the successful merger of Tinubu’s ACN and Buhari’s CPC into APC in 2013 ahead of the 2015 elections, Tinubu would never have been president in 2023. PDP is already a walking corpse; its biggest financier Nyesom Wike is also its number-one traitor. LP is no longer the force it was in 2023, further worsened by Peter Obi’s defection to ADC. Tinubu knows, therefore, that a peaceful ADC is the most potent threat to his 2027 reelection. From now until February 2027, expect ADC leaders to expend more energy on court-related matters than actual electioneering. If Tinubu must be politically toppled in 2027, all opposition must come together to adopt a candidate. That, or it’s balablu and enikan lomo until 2031!
