India didn't become a net steel exporter because its mills got sharper, the 12% safeguard duty that went up in April 2025 cut imports by 31.7% in one year. Exports rose 36% to 6.6 MT, imports fell to 6.5 MT, the gap is just 100,000 tonnes. That is a tariff-created surplus, not a cost advantage. China dumped a record 131 MT of steel globally in 2025 while sitting on 640 MT of overcapacity. India put up a wall. It worked. & the duty drops to 11% by 2028 and ends India now makes 169 MT of crude steel a year and is a net exporter. But producing one tonne of steel needs 0.7-0.8 tonnes of coking coal, and India imports 90% of that. Coking coal imports will hit 94 MT this year and 149 MT by 2035. So the import bill didn't go away, it just moved from finished steel to raw material. When Queensland floods hit in January, coking coal prices spiked 50% and Indian HRC prices jumped ₹3,400 per tonne within weeks. Net exporter in steel, fully dependent in the input that makes it. Italy, Vietnam, Belgium, UAE, Spain - these are markets where Chinese steel is getting blocked by anti-dumping duties. Globally, 29 trade cases were filed against China between 2024 and early 2025, twice the rate of the previous four years. India is picking up orders that Chinese mills are losing access to. That is a window, not a permanent position. China real estate sector keeps sinking, & it very severe than i personally imagine so their 640 MT of excess steel keeps looking for new destinations. Steel is a very power-hungry industry. This growth (169 MT crude steel) needs huge electricity, Odisha adding 140 MT new capacity & will need even more power and hydrogen-ready tech later. Europe is buying more Indian steel because of global supply shifts and lower Chinese exports to some markets. FOCUS ON ENERGY
