when people say spotify is bad for artists, do they mean the overall paymenst from listeners are too low or is it how the payments ar divvied up between arist/label/spotify etc. has overall spending on recorded music gone up or down in the streaming era?

i think what’s actually happening is that it’s never been a more bummer time to work on the biz side of music 30 yrs ago you were being paid to go to dive bars to catch the next nirvana, now your job is essentially sending “subject: love it!” emails to children from tik tok

Pro tip for @Spotify users: if ya dig an artist go ahead and hit the follow button ESPECIALLY for smaller artists. There’s literally no downside to doing this. It’s not like a normal social media thing. You won’t have to scroll endlessly thru a feed filled with rants or pics. 1/3

i am very fortunate to have a career as an artist and make money from streaming. but the very talented songwriters i work with do not, even if songs they've written get 10s or 100s of millions of streams. this isn't a sustainable ecosystem

the #WGAStrike is a good time to remember that songwriters/producers: - do not have a union or any formalized bargaining process with music streaming - aren't compensated for any work that's not released - are paid about 1/10th the royalties of what the artist is paid

very excited for AI to progress sufficiently that someone, with the right technology and prompts, will finally be able to do what no musician or songwriter has been able to do so far: make a good wingtip song
