A reminder: grammar and punctuation has existed for hundreds, nay thousands of years. LLMs using it correctly is what we should expect from a LARGE LANGUAGE MODEL. If you don't know how to use punctuation correctly, that's not a tElL tAlE sIgN oF aI. Neither is personal style.

@mikhail_b_ @MarcoAlmeidaPT Agreed - ChatGPT has explained to me that – is the correct way to split up a sentence (not the hyphen that I put after the word "Agreed" 😅) but these days it does look like AI because most people don't know what.

It’s so true - every time I see a long dash, I think “AI wrote that!” ChatGPT told me when it’s correct to use them instead of hyphens, so I started doing it… but maybe I’ll stop so people don’t think it’s AI 🙃🤖
Andrew Hoyer@andrewhoyer

I received a document containing text for a new blog post for a site I manage, and there are many instances of the m-dash (—). Is this in fact, as many people are suggesting, a clear sign that it is written by AI? Or do the more educated among us use them frequently?

@KatieKeithBarn2 I use them all the time and not in a grammatically correct way. It's a better representation of how I talk than semi-colons and parentheses. It's a shame that this is the new "AI did this" pearl. I hope we can retain individuality in writing regardless of whether AI did it.

@markzahra @KatieKeithBarn2 @wpmayor I don't think there will ever be a day where we can push a button and create amazing work. There will always be a skill set in need right across the bell curve! Thanks for the nice words, Katie!

@KatieKeithBarn2 @itswptom @wpmayor Agreed, it's a great read, and a reality check for those who think vibe coding is just a few minutes of work to have the AI build something for you. Maybe that day will come, but for now there's more to it than just that.

@rebekah_creates I've had exactly the same discussion recently! It comes from a good place in my opinion, but I've removed em dashes from my American English writing where a client doesn't want to see it.

Guys, I'm having an existential crisis... I use em dashes constantly — as in, they're one of my favorite forms of punctuation — and someone has now told me that this "proves AI wrote it." Am... am *I* AI?!

@schutzsmith I got a similar look when I explained how we loaded games off of cassettes. Well, then I had to explain what a cassette was, so I got two rounds of weird looks.
