I have this cousin brother who is much older than me. My dad is only four years older than him, so he feels more like an uncle. He dated his girlfriend for years. When he decided to marry her, he followed our culture: he went to her family with elders, declared his intention, and paid the initial bride price deposit after they accepted. One evening, he returned from work and found her crying in his room. She had a key and full access to his house. When he comforted her and asked what was wrong, she said, “If I tell you, you will cancel the marriage and bring shame to my family.” He reassured her that he would still marry her. Only then did she confess: when she was younger, she had been raped, got pregnant, and gave birth to a boy who was already 12 years old by 2012. She had hidden it from him. My cousin pitied her and didn’t want to shame her family, so he foolishly forgave her and kept the secret. He married her anyway, called her “Mummy,” and gave her full access to everything he owned. In 2023, his 11-year-old son reported that a man was calling his mom “baby” and “my love,”. My cousin monitored her and discovered she was cheating with her boss at work. He confronted them. They didn’t deny it. They later divorced, and he asked her to leave his house. A few months later, she and her boss returned. They told him that his second son the seven year old actually belongs to the boss, not to him. Moral lesson:Marry someone who deserves your love. Never marry out of pity. Pity can blind you and bring years of pain and betrayal.
