My first exam as a Unilorin student. I slept in school, went to observe subh at the school mosque where they admonished us (freshers) to have all our documents intact. I had all relevant documents but was unsure about one (which wasn’t really necessary).
I asked around and got mixed responses so I decided to quickly dash to town and get back asap. I stayed with one elegbon at Opo Malu. Getting there, he welcomed me and persuaded me to have breakfast before leaving. I was scared but he assured me I’ll get back just in time. He was cooking rice and beans.
We gisted while he cooked with his windows closed. By the time I peeped outside, it was clear and I started feeling uneasy. He had to serve me the top that was dry a bit. I ate quickly and left. I got to challenge and was met by a very long queue. Apparently, it was first exam day and we had GNS 101. GNS was a general course hence the the queue.
After over 40mins, I got on a bus. The traffic was building. We moved for a bit and the bus broke down. I started panicking. We got into another bus. Unilorin students know how long it is from challenge to school. The paper was slated for 9am, I got to school exactly 9:05. I rushed to the venue only to find out the venue was changed last minute. I started crying. I ran through the walk way and stared checking the huge lecture theaters from block 1 to 10. I still couldn’t find my class. Some examiners heard me out, some rebuked and chased me out, non could help me. I went to the department as a last resort. It was almost 9:30am, I was gasping for breath.
The rule was not to allow any student into the exam hall 30mins after the exam started. The secretary to the HOD was a woman, a good mother who immediately took up my case. She was taking me from one lecturer to the other, both of us in tears. She later took me to the HOD who stood up without asking any questions, took me to the exact hall and instructed the examiner to allow me. The examiner was a mean doctor who lashed out at me and threatened he wouldn’t give me an extra minute.
I wrote the exam and got a "B" grade.
It was a miracle. This is my personal story, a true life story.
