To everyone hyped about the $MASK airdrop finally being confirmed: You might want to temper your expectations. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being one of the most underwhelming airdrops we’ve ever seen. Sure, it’s possible MetaMask could allocate 10–20% of their supply to users, which in total could amount to billions in value. However, it’s the distribution that is key here. This will likely be the widest distributed airdrop in crypto history: - As of June, MetaMask had around 30M monthly active users. - Most of those users have multiple wallet addresses, for example I personally have hundreds. - And that’s only active users. MetaMask has been around since 2016, so if they decide to reward historic activity, that dilutes the pool even further. - Besides, Joseph Lubin has already said the airdrop’s main purpose will be decentralization, so the broader the distribution, the better from their perspective. Hence, I wouldn’t be surprised if 100M+ addresses end up being eligible. Which means the average payout per wallet could be as little as $10–20. Just for comparison, the Uniswap airdrop went out to just 250k wallets, which is orders of magnitude fewer. So for those expecting life-changing money: this probably won’t be the generational wealth event you have been waiting for. Much more likely, it’ll just be another airdrop from a company that doesn’t treat its token like equity, handing it out like a goodie bag, only to end up with disappointment and FUD instead of real community alignment. Don’t hand in your resignation letter just yet.
