@BVMRO1893 @val_spirit Yes that’s correct, the Bulgarian communists did that because of pressure from Stalin. The communists forced people in the Pirin region to declare themselves Macedonian when Bulgaria was still occupied by the Soviet Union in 1946. After the Tito-Stalin rift that reversed.

@val_spirit Yes I know. I know the story of Novakovic, and how he was unsuccessful at convincing the local Bulgarian population of his ideas. But to be clear, some of that idea of an independent Macedonian identity is also started by the Bulgarian communists, mixed with the left wing VMRO.

One correction though - the Macedonian identity was invented end of 19 century by the Servians in order to separate local Bulgarians from Bulgaria and facilitate Servian expansion south. Through commies (Tito & Stalin) totalitarian methods this fake identity's created after 1945.

A sign of mature and complex understanding of history: When you realize that the Russian Empire, the USSR and the Russian Federation are EXACTLY the same thing under different brand names.

This reminds me of an old Soviet joke (context: Cossacks were a prototypical “tough guy” in Soviet jokes). A Soviet official from the city was visiting the far east and being shown around by a Cossack. They run a red light. The official asks the Cossack, why didn’t you stop? Offended, the Cossack replies: we are a proud and strong people, why would we stop just because a light asks us to? They keep driving, and then stop at a green light. The official asks, why did you stop, the light is green? The Cossack: oh we have to stop. There might be another Cossack driving through and we don’t want to get hit.
