@ivanovitch I really think your show could cover some episodes of Invasion, the TV series. It is a truly miserable yet expensive piece of intellectual property. So much so some speculated it might be a money laundering operation.

@JennMGreenberg I don't know that most people are arguing that he *should* have "sympathy for the cartels," so much as that sympathy has no bearing on his duty to abide by the law at all times, not just when he chooses. His feelings are irrelevant to his job and duties. Do you disagree?

@JennMGreenberg I know you've gotten a lot of abuse for this, and I'm sorry that anyone thinks that's the right way to voice disagreement. That said, I'm curious what point you were making with your post... Just that his response wasn't surprising? Or that it was justified?

It would be wise for those criticizing JD Vance to recall that his mother was a drug addict who nearly died multiple times right in front of him. This issue is extremely personal to him and he cannot be expected to have any sympathy with cartels.

@TakketyTam And either way, I'm sorry for your family's loss. I'm not asking you to sympathize with drug traffickers. I'm asking you not to cheer for selective application of the law that protects both of us.

@TakketyTam Taylor, I want to be clear. I'm not defending drug dealers. I think they should be held accountable, and could have been. But I think the law exists to make sure that we have the right to defend ourselves before being convicted and punished.

Y'all don't understand. My uncle was found dead on the street and my widowed grandma had to ID his body. The hatred I have for drugs will never go away.

@TakketyTam Respectfully, this isn't a question of terrorism. You have no information here except what you've read, and you're assuming it's truth. If I read that you were dealing fentanyl, you'd defend me killing you for it, regardless of whether I had proof or you got a chance to speak?

@TakketyTam I hear you. And yet, the whole point of the law is that you don't get to make that decision, and neither do I. If we had the chance to attack them, we had the chance to capture them and prove their guilt, rather than just accusing them.

@TakketyTam @JennMGreenberg Except that no one *is* defending terrorists. They're defending the rule of law, even for people who *might* be doing things that are illegal, because when you eliminate due process, simply accusing *anyone* of a crime is sufficient to punish (or in this case, kill) them.

I don’t consider myself “MAGA.” I’m probably more conservative than Trump. But when he’s right he’s right and when he’s wrong he’s wrong. This is how I strive to view everyone’s actions, Republican or Democrat. Personally, I find things are far less complicated and confusing when you ignore political branding and focus on morality and ethics. But some people … dang. They hate him so much that he cannot do anything right. He could donate 10,000 bananas to the zoo and people would complain that he’s giving monkeys diabetes, destroying the atmosphere with toxic banana over-production, and disenfranchising coconut and citrus farmers.

@danielleburrito @emilykmay She didn't say she was defending him. She just said no one else seems to have expressed something that describes her experience.

@emilykmay Shame on you and the NYT for defending RFK’s hateful remarks. As an educator, and as a family member to parents of a child with autism, the hurt, anger, and fear that *many* parents feel over RFK’s statements and proposed policies is profound and justified.

@emilykmay I can only imagine how it feels to hear someone validate and not dismiss the experience you live with. I just wish it was coming from a place of real compassion, instead of weaponized ignorance and political manipulation. You deserve better.

@emilykmay But in the process, I feel like he's using your daughter, and your pain, as misleading evidence to support his ignorant and dangerous beliefs, and to make people fear an epidemic that has more to do with broadened definitions and wider testing, not the danger of vaccines.
