once you start to understand music theory as a standard language to describe what you hear in your head and feel in your body as opposed to a set of rules, i think it becomes a lot more fun and interesting

musicians get so intimidated by theory lingo that they decide the easier route would be to simply reverse-engineer it from first principles, meanwhile the fundamentals of popular music theory are simple and intuitive enough that a lot of musicians actually manage to do just that.
