If Mathematics is Pink Floyd meets Jimi Hendrix, then Math Education is Dave Matthews Band meets Huey Lewis and the News. We are "listening" to some really bland and boring music, folks.

@Mathgarden If you really want to make these open-ended and fun, give the students the left hand side of any of these and have them use whatever (valid) rules they want to change it to anything else. Soon they'll start competing to see whose is more creative.

I wish I was making this up, but no. In 2023, trig identities is where math interest goes to die—in spite of the self-proclamation that it is fun! I am embarrassed to be a math educator some days. We still don’t get it, do we? No wonder kids hate math decade after decade…

I read most of Building Thinking Classrooms over Thanksgiving and have *so many* thoughts and plans. I seem to remember that there was a group interested in discussing this book. Am I imagining that? I'd love to do a session or series of discussions by zoom if there is interest.
