“Remember that other people may be totally wrong. But they don’t think so. Don’t condemn them. Any fool can do that. Try to understand them. Only wise, tolerant, exceptional people even try to do that.” Dale Carnegie
In a conversation this past week, I was asked how you can help others change what they do. The
reality is that you can’t change anyone. The only thing you can do is create a space where change is more likely to be initiated by someone on their own.
What I used to really do in the past was try to talk and persuade someone to my point of view. Perhaps I could convince them to embrace my way?
But now, I know that the best way to have others change is not to try to talk them out of something, but to listen.
And to listen with the idea that you might be wrong.
Perhaps, the answer is not on one side or the other, but the solution is somewhere in the middle.
If you want someone else to change, be open to the change yourself.
I appreciate that reminder this past week.
TLDR: Lead by listening.
3 More Things I Learned This Week:
1. No matter how much anxiety I get before a run, I always feel calmer after. I don’t always love the process, but I do love the feeling of completing something challenging.
2. In a world full of noise, being able to sit in silence is a blessing.
3. I will never get sick of my kids running to the door and waving goodbye when I drive off somewhere. I hate leaving, but nothing in my life has ever made me feel more appreciated than watching them wave and smile.
What did you learn this week?
