Is your hamburger menu (☰) actually accessible? 🍔🚫 In responsive design, we often rely on hamburger menus to save space. But for users who rely on assistive technologies, an unlabeled icon can become a barrier. If you use a hamburger menu, make sure it includes: 1️⃣ Proper labeling: Icons alone don’t communicate meaning to screen readers. Add a visible text label or ARIA label so users understand what the button does. 2️⃣ Open/closed state indication: Users should always know whether the menu is expanded or collapsed. That state must be communicated programmatically to assistive technologies. Visible navigation is often the better option. But when space is limited, accessibility still matters. Good accessibility isn’t about adding extra features at the end.
