#FridayFireside Last year in Benoni, I saw a man who resembled my grandfather, Sekuru, the father of SaToto. I kid you not, gedye-gedye chaiyo. I froze. Do I ask, or just walk away? I chose the latter. Bear with me; this is a long short story. Sekuru lived in South Africa for 36 years. Like many men of his time, the lure of paid work in gold mines, railroads, factories, and farms was hard to resist. The Witwatersrand Native Labour Association (WNLA), also known as Wenela, a colonial migrant labour hire recruiting agency, facilitated it all. And just like Jan van Riebeeck, these men did not bring women with them. In Rhodesia, Sekuru, a notorious charmer, left behind a wife and a mistress, each with children. In SA he later lived with another woman and fathered four children. But the stories don’t end there. There were other affairs and entanglements, as well as more children. When he finally returned home in Rusape, Sekuru was frail, literally with one foot in the grave. His South African life was buried with him. All he left were a few photos of women he loved and a number of children he claimed were his. To this day, no one has ever sought out those long-lost family members. Could the man from Benoni be...? The plot thickens. I later learnt Sekuru had lived in the Benoni area for eleven years. As my time here draws to a close, I find myself wondering if I should have sought out that man. Did my ancestors somehow lead me to meet him? If they did, I hope they will forgive me. My grandfather’s story is not unique. It is the story of countless men from the subregion and farther afield, who boarded istimela and travelled for days to work in gold mines, railways, and factories across SA. Many, like my Sekuru, left their families behind. In SA, they found more than work; they found love, too. At first, they trekked home every year. Then every two years. Then every five. And eventually, the intervals grew longer. Some never went back and their final resting places are here. Others reinvented themselves, adopting new identities and starting new lives. A Southern African DNA database holds the potential to uncover much. It could reconnect families across borders and generations. Yet, as we've seen, DNA and genealogy can bring both solace and upheaval. Imagine the chaos it would cause today. So I ask myself, did I miss a moment, let a chance slip by? Or did I respect a boundary? Perhaps some stories are waiting to be discovered, while others should remain undisturbed. The END.

@DrJawaadArif By localizing prototyping, we are drastically reducing the 'cost of failure' ,innovators can now test, break, and refine their products in days instead of months. We’re hoping to see a surge in homegrown hardware solutions for local problems! 🇿🇼🚀
