Well, outside of Georgia, many people still do not know much about the organized genocide of the Circassians by the Russian Empire in the 1800s. The Russians were not just killing and deporting the Circassians - they organized sieges around small settlements and kill women and children by literally burning them. The Circassian genocide was carried out by several Russian Imperial generals, most notably Grigory Zass, Nikolai Yevdokimov, and Alexei Yermolov. These men were rewarded and celebrated with glory and triumph (and their legacies are still celebrated today in Russia). And yet, for example, Grigory Zass describes the Circassians as children of a "lower race" who must either be enslaved, expelled, or destroyed. The process of Russification of the surviving Circassians began very rapidly and continued into the Soviet Union. Russian propaganda, which sometimes posed as Turkish and sometimes as Circassian, closed off most of the sources, harassed academics, and instilled a hatred of other peoples in both the local and fleeing Circassians in an attempt to cover up its own crimes. To this day, Russia spends enormous amounts of money to fuel anti-Georgian ideas among the Circassians. I have encountered misguided individuals on this platform who, instead of focusing on exposing Russian crimes and conceptualizing true Circassian independence, glorify the very empire that decimated them. In doing so, they often resort to insulting Georgians. I hope they will eventually realize that a strong, sovereign Georgia is not a threat to the Circassian people, but on the contrary. Georgia remains the first and only country (except Ukraine) to officially recognize the Circassian genocide. Except Georgia, there are very few places in the world where Circassian flags fly proudly, cultural centers operate in the capital, and a permanent memorial to the genocide stands - like the one in Anaklia, Georgia, pictured here. Every year on May 21st, people gather here to pay tribute to the memory of the fallen.
